This is one of the most important documentaries Reel Pride has ever shown.
It is so important we’ve not scheduled anything else against it.
Several church leaders have chosen this documentary to sermonize about in Fresno this week, for no matter what your religious beliefs, this film screams out with the pain and anguish caused by those who choose to use the Bible as a weapon against family and friends.
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, the transitions each family has chosen (or not chosen) to engage upon are discussed openly. Some of these transitions result in horrific stories or images, highlighting the internal yet civil hate created by those who have created such environments for people who learned this behavior.
Skillfully constructed, painstakingly researched, wielding whimsical animation and a proudly unapologetic point of view, “For the Bible Tells Me So” explores the intersection of religion and homosexuality in America today, concluding that, perhaps, hatred is the greatest abomination of all.
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Outfest 2007 and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2007.
