In an interesting twist on the gay marriage debate, “Through Thick and Thin” focuses on this very real immigration issue in America, as bi-national couples fight to stay together. This gripping documentary leaps across borders as these lovers are unable to do, and we see firsthand the insurmountable odds facing gays and lesbians who dare to care for each other across ‘enemy’ lines.
Confronted with the heart-wrenching prospect of having to separate, often breaking up established families, some couples also live in fear of forced deportation to an oppressive and homophobic country.
At the mercy of courts and judges, they find their patience, careers and family lives tested by a government that refuses to recognize their relationships.
Filmmaker Sebastian Cordoba, himself a survivor of a bi-national relationship, captures intimate moments in the brave efforts by these couples to stay together. Tender, touching and inspiring, “Through Thick and Thin” skillfully depicts the troubled waters that some couples must navigate in order to stay together.
