Cutesy teenager Jade runs an after-hours website, under the not-so-careful eye of her Grandmother and the very discerning eyes of the Taiwanese police.
Gorgeous Takeko has taken up her mentor’s art of tattoo creation, and taken with it the burden of spirituality behind the art, her father’s death, and her brother’s disability.
Jade feels only a Takeko tattoo will grant her a wider base audience for her web-cam work, and the encounter awaken memories of a ten-year old crush for Takeko. While Takeko continues to deny the teen her dream of a very special and meaningful tattoo, the Spider Lily framed on Takeko’s wall, Jade decides to use her seductive abilities to weaken Takeko’s resolve.
Jade’s teasing invokes a fragile resistance in Takeko and instigates an inevitable meltdown for all involved, ultimately revealing deeper meanings — and possibilities for healing the past.
Spider Lilies is absolutely gorgeous, as are the cast members involved…lush settings and magical creations mix with memories gone by as flashbacks reveal the intense pain feeding Takeko’s art. This film has taken many awards, including the prestigious Berlin Teddy Award for Best Feature Film.
