The Bubble

  • $10.00
  • Director: Eytan Fox
  • 2006, Israel, 117 minutes

The director of Reel Pride favorite “Yossi and Jaguar” returns with his best film yet, a modern-day Romeo and Juliet set amid the turmoil of Jews, Arabs, and Middle East politics.

Yet the politics of the day only give slight motivation at first in this tale set in Tel Aviv’s hippest neighborhood, secluded from the conflicts raging around it.  Three progressive (and hot) young flatmates, gay friends Noam and Yali and their best-good girlfriend Lulu, share an apartment, hang out, listen to music, watch TV, and do their best to get laid.

The ‘bubble’ of their serene existence bursts when Noam meets and falls in love with a sexy young Palestinian boy named Ashraf, who needs the roommates’ help to stay in Tel Aviv illegally.  Given a new Hebrew name and Israeli clothes, they set him up to work at the local hangout, Yali’s Café.

Will love really conquer all, or will the progressive protests and radical sexual tensions give way to the utopian dreams of these young idealists…or worse, to a tragic ending?

Smart and very touching, “The Bubble” features fantastic acting, impressive chemistry, and the constant topical reminder of the influence brought by the war and hatred still churning in the Middle East today.

Winner:  Audience Award, Toronto Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
