Jerusalem is Proud to Present

  • $5.00
  • Director: Nitzan Gilady
  • 2007, Israel, 82 minutes. In Hebrew with English Subtitles

Just when we think it’s safe around the world to come out with pride, the orthodox past of Jerusalem conflicts with the inevitable future, and a scheduled Pride March becomes yet another war front in the streets.

Surrounded by Gaza bombings and the longtime war-torn Middle East, organizers of Jerusalem World Pride 2005 are faced with fierce categorical opposition from religious and political leaders who view their peaceful celebration as ‘moral terrorism.’

Director Gilady gets amazing footage and buries himself deeply in the emotions of the participants and those in opposition.  This beautifully shot documentary is striking both in its portrayal of the courage of the civil rights movement and the stunning and incendiary relationships between the opposing sides.  Footage is combined from Parliament sessions, American Rabbinical assistance to the conservative opposition, and one brave female leader (which is unusual in Jerusalem!) to make up this amazing portrait of the beginning of a movement where the outcome is still unknown.

Winner:  Outstanding Documentary Feature, Outfest LA 2007.
